Tkachuk Signs One-Year Contract and other NHL Notables posted by Jeff Ponder

St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced Friday that forward Keith Tkachuk has agreed to return to the club for one more year.  The Blues and Tkachuk have been having talks about a return since being ousted from the playoffs in April.  The deal is reportedly worth $2.15 million.

“Keith is a veteran leader who played a key role with our club’s success this past season,” Davidson added. “He and his wife Chantal are first class people and have been tremendous to the St. Louis Blues organization and the St. Louis community.”

Tkachuk tallied 25 goals and 24 assists in 79 games in 2008-09, along with 14 power-play goals that placed him second on the team just behind Brad Boyes.  He started the season red hot though, scoring 7 goals in the Blues' first 6 games of the season.  He was also the only Blue to participate in the 2009 NHL All-Star Game, which saw him score the first goal of the game.  His point totals have trailed off in his eight seasons in a Blues jersey, considering in 2001-02 Tkachuk netted 38 goals and 75 points.  Scoring is not what Tkachuk was brought back for though.

Tkachuk has come a long way from his days of scoring 40-50 goals with the Phoenix Coyotes and Winnipeg Jets franchise.  Not only is he still widely known as a hitter and a mule in front of the net, but he has added much depth to his game.  Tkachuk spent a good portion of 2009 as a third line center, usually between the likes of gritty wingers Dan Hinote and Brad Winchester.  When Tkachuk was on these checking lines, there was always a chance that a puck would cross the opposing red goal line.  But his strength came in when he would forecheck and pressure the other team's defenses.  Growing a little older, Tkachuk learned to adapt his game and still be a presence even though he cannot score 40 goals in a season anymore.

NHL Playoffs Rock On! First the East posted by Joshua Tarkoff

nhl

Welcome everyone to my first post here on the hockey blogs! I know I am a Floridian, but hockey certainly runs through my veins. Today, I will first be talking about the Eastern Conference. And...how about them Bruins! They look like the team they were when the season started. I was a bit concerned about them in the middle of the season, I mean after all they lost to the Panthers and the Lightning in one road trip. I did not think they were contenders when the playoffs started, but I am starting to rethink that now. Their power play gives me nightmares. Bruins in sweep, I say.

The biggest surprise series so far has to be Caps-Rangers. Just like the Bruins, I was not much of a believer in the Rangers, but after taking the first 2 in Washington, they may just have a chance. I must say that the Washington fans are tough, I watched them lose to my Panthers in March and the team started booing after just giving up 2 goals...rough crowd! Things do not look good if Ovie gets going though. Maybe it was because he was caught watching the Rangers practice the other day ( http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs/2009/news?id=4083635). Lol, that Ovie. Whatever his off the ice antics, I firmly believe he is the best player we have in the game right now. I had the privilege of watching him twice this year and I was astounded at how good he is. Caps in 7.

And NJ is quietly doing their thing without much fanfare. While I am not too much of a Devils fan, it is tough to go against Brodeur and company. They may not be pretty, but they do have a solid playoff system going there. I was thinking upset by the Canes at first as they finished the regular season so strong, but I can't go against Brodeur quite yet. Devils in 6.

Duke's New $15.2 Million Practice Facility posted by kellex

http://lebasketbawl.blogspot.com/2008/02/dukes-new-practice-facility.htm

The Duke Blue Devils just became a little more spoiled! The team had just returned home from a road trip to Florida State on January 16th when they were introduced to their brand new 56,000 square foot practice facility. The Duke players met at Cameron Indoor stadium for a team meeting when Coach Mike Krzyzewski took them for a little walk. The walk, through an underground tunnel, brought the team right into the middle of the facility and had them all "wide-eyed."

This facility is as top of the line as you can get from any college in the nation and cost a mere $15.2 million. It includes a 25 seat theater, 2 full length basketball courts modeled after Cameron Indoor, a weight room, and a banquet room.

Current and former players will have access to the new building 24 hours a day and will even have a special entrance to keep them away from crazy Dukie fans! The planners toured 27 different campuses to figure out exactly what was needed and created quite the facility.

Welcome to a new era in Hockey blogging posted by Roland Lesterlin

As with any new relationship, I understand your reticence.  Questions abound about my qualifications as a hockey guru.  My name is not synonymous with Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin or Jaromir Jagr.  You have not been a part of my phenomenal success in fantasy hockey; though admittedly I did not realized that San Jose's Jonathon Cheechoo would have only 4 goals in 28 games.  Luckily I traded him before he got injured for Maxim Afinogenov; another slumping forward who usually gets hot after the New Year.

Putting that aside, if you are interested in the finer points of waiver wire work or want advice on trades, I’m here for you.  If you want to discuss the fact that the New York Rangers have a league low 2.13 Goals per game average, I’m here for you.  The only thing you will never find here is praise for the New Jersey Devils.  Admittedly, I might discuss Brian Gionta’s rebound from his early season slump or how Martin Brodeur has regained his stellar form; but never will I say I even remotely enjoy Devils’ hockey (except when the Rangers hand them a 1-0 overtime loss).

Putting aside my petty prejudices, I will gladly add another distraction to your already procrastination-prone day.

Welcome to Roland’s Hockey blog.

Let’s get right into one of hockey’s biggest stories:  Scott Niedermayer, the great #27’s return!

The Anaheim Ducks must move at least $880,000 of salary to accommodate him.  For those of you with deep fantasy leagues, Todd Marchant has been a healthy scratch and might be finding his way to another team via re-entry waivers.  That would clear $1.2 million of cap space.  Is that enough to also accommodate another free agent, Teemu Selanne?  I would say no.  Selanne is retired, period.  He just had another kid and if any of you readers out there have children, you know that his mind is not on hockey right now.  He’s not coming back.  Sorry, Ducks Fans.

Lamoriello surprised by Hall election (AP)

There aren't many things in hockey that catch New Jersey Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello off guard. Having his secretary peer into his office on Tuesday and tell the 66-year-old that Bill Hay of the Hockey Hall of Fame was on the telephone was one, however. Hay was calling to tell Lamoriello that he had been voted into the Hall of Fame in the builder category for his four... [read full article]
